Girl Crush: Maggie Rogers

With Lana Del Rey’s new single, and Future dropping not one but TWO surprise albums, you could say that 2017 has already been a pretty fire year for music. Enter Maggie Rogers, who released her debut EP, Now That the Light is Fading, just 10 days ago.

Maggie, who grew up in rural Maryland, refined her songwriting and singing chops in a master class at NYU, where she moved Pharrell to tears with her track, “Alaska”:

Hoping to break out of being known as “the girl who made Pharrell cry,” Maggie recently made her TV debut by performing “Alaska” on Jimmy Fallon. This performance lead to nearly sold-out tickets for her upcoming tour and Maggie is now well on her way to becoming a household name.

While “Alaska” is the track that’s propelling Maggie to mainstream stardom, “Dog Years” is what made me fall in love with Maggie’s work:

Her overall sound is relaxing and ethereal. Her gawky dancing brings about a raw and down-to-earth vibe. Content-wise, “Dog Years” demonstrates an impressive level of lyricism and captures love and timelessness in an effortlessly beautiful fashion.

Other tracks on her EP worth listening to are “On + Off” (soon to be covered by  a cappella groups everywhere, I’m calling it now) and “Better.” The least favorable track, generally speaking, is “Color Song,” which is the most folksy and the least pop.

I’ve had Now That the Light is Fading on repeat for the last week or so. When I started bumping her tunes out my speakers, they had less than 1,000 plays each on Spotify. As of now, Alaska has amassed over 28 million plays and counting!

At 22, Maggie is just starting out, and she’s made it clear that she’s definitely here to stay. Watch out for this one, world!

I absolutely love this EP. Do you think she’ll go for a similar sound on her album?

I hope so! I feel like she’ll go for the indie pop vibe rather than the more folksy stuff since that’s what everyone’s responding to! Thanks so much for reading 🙂
