Fashion, Lifestyle, and Blogging Changes I Made in 2017

Idk about y’all, but 2017 was a pretty big year for me. I graduated college, started my first full-time job, and changed so many things in my life. This post is a reflection on everything I’ve changed for myself and what I’m still working on changing for next year. I experienced a lot of personal growth and NRoH’s following grew immensely (shout out to all of you who joined me on Twitter/Instagram/Facebook/Pinterest). Here’s what I did for myself this year and why.

FASHION CHANGES:

1. I stopped buying crop tops

Crop tops were THE THING like 4-5 years ago. As I’ve gotten older and now, especially since I’ve entered the professional world, what the heck do I need more crop tops for? The trend has definitely faded and I just can’t justify spending any more money on shirts that I would only be able to wear on weekends and for going out.

2. I stopped buying white shirts

I know what you’re thinking, white shirts are a staple!  In my opinion, it’s not worth it to buy them because eventually, the pits turn yellow! I know that’s kind of gross, but it’s totally true. I decided I don’t want to buy any more super cute white shirts that I’ll have to get rid of sooner rather than later.

3. I started populating my wardrobe with more basics

If you look waaaaay back into this blog’s archives, you’ll see me wearing the craziest prints and colors. Style is ever-changing, so I’ve slowly shifted away from prints and I’ve been buying plain sweaters, dresses, and tops in order to build an easier, more minimal wardrobe.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES:

1. I got my first credit card

credit card no repeats or hesitations

This is something I put off for a long time, but only because I was scared! This summer, I finally took the plunge and signed up for a Chase Freedom card. I was really worried that I wouldn’t be approved since I didn’t have any prior history, but it was shockingly SO EASY to get this card! I filled out the form online and I was approved instantly. My card arrived in the mail a week later. Many of my friends in college had credit cards that were tied to their parents’ accounts, but I am so proud to say that I have my OWN card. If you’d like to start building credit and if you use Chase as your regular bank, I highly recommend this card. If you sign up for Chase Freedom using my referral link, you’ll get $150 after spending your first $500 (free money, y’all!!!).

2. I upped my skincare routine

My skincare game is the best it’s ever been. I regularly exfoliate, cleanse, use a serum, tone, and moisturize! My routine has actually changed since I posted about it over the summer. I now use the Biore Deep Pore Cleanser since it’s cheaper and soooo much more powerful than the Boscia one.

3. I donated to charities through everyday activities

After my summer internship at Sharebite, I was inspired to find other easy ways to support charities by doing ordinary things. I rounded up all of the great sites and apps I found in this blog post. I definitely use Amazon Smile and Charity Miles the most out of all the methods I profiled.

4.  I opened my own Etsy store

Yes, I’ve been pretty low-key about this, but it’s true! I have an Etsy store with a product I started called Hoe on the Go. I was inspired to create emergency, prepacked overnight bags after packing the same stuff to go to my boyfriend’s house. Hoe on the Go exists to help you be more comfortable when you decide to sleepover somewhere unexpectedly.

BLOGGING CHANGES:

1. I switched my blog to self-hosting

no repeats or hesitations self hosting

This was a huuuuge project for me and I’m so happy I finally took the plunge and redesigned both the front end and backend of my blog! Using self-hosted WordPress has allowed me to make my site more professional and more optimized for SEO. I highly recommend using SiteGround! I consider myself more technically inclined than average, but I still had a few questions/concerns throughout the transition process. SiteGround is staffed with absolute pros and they can successfully talk you through any tutorial! If you want to go self-hosted for the new year, you can sign up for a plan using my affiliate link (pretty please!).

2. I started growing my following more seriously

I really wish I had done this more intensely when I was still in school, but alas, my priorities were different when I was a student.  At the beginning of 2017, I had less than 1,000 Twitter followers, ~200 Instagram followers, ~130 Pinterest followers, and a non-existent Facebook fan page! I started my growth tactics less than 6 months ago and I’m so close to meeting my end of year goals. I’m so proud of all the work I’ve done (especially on Twitter) and I’ve connected with some of the most incredible people along the way (maaaaajor shout outs to my most supportive mutuals: Austen, Dom, Kristen, Melissa, Gigi, Francesca, Kat, Sheila, Rosana, and many more. 2018 is gonna see even more explosive growth and I can’t wait! None of what I’m doing would be possible with your continued readership and support, so if you’re reading this, you ROCK!

3. I started listening to blogging podcasts

influencer podcast no repeats or hesitations

I posted about these podcasts super recently, but I’m mentioning it again because they are so, so amazing! It’s tough enough balancing blogging with a full-time job, so I love listening to these podcasts on my way to work. I love learning how to strategize and grow my audience on the go so that when I come home after work, I have the tools already in my mind!

Next year, I have a few goals in mind that I’m hoping to achieve:

1. Move into my own NYC apartment

Yeahhhhh this is a huge one. Like many post-grads, I moved back home to save $$$$. Next year, I’m going to be moving out into my own place and I honestly cannot WAIT. I’m really looking forward to having privacy again and of course, decorating! There’s gonna be a lot of home decor content on the blog next year as I figure out how to trick out my new digs.

2. Start and grow a YouTube channel

Yes, folks, it’s finally happening. I’m both terrified and excited for my channel’s launch! I’ve started filming footage, and I’m just nervous because the camera quality + sound quality may not be up to standard. The topics I’m covering, however, are right on the money, so hopefully, you guys will love it anyway!

3. Grow my social following to 10,000+ followers

10,000+ has been the goal for a while. While I’m so proud of how far I came this year, I’m still not even halfway to 10,000. I also want to be sure I build a supportive, encouraging, and engaging community. I want to connect with other like-minded people, so if you’re a blogger looking for the same thing, hmu on social media! I’m always, always, always looking for new friends, so don’t be shy 🙂

4. Become fully vegetarian

This is something I’ve already started working on! I have been gradually losing my taste for meat for the past few months, so I decided that it made sense for me to try and become vegetarian. I am, unfortunately, not fully vegetarian yet. I’m still grappling with the fact that when I don’t meat, I’m frickin’ starving.  I really hope to cut meat entirely out of my diet next year, which will be easier when I move out and have my own kitchen to cook meals in!

This post was so much fun to write and things are radically different for me now than they were this time last year! What goals have you accomplished this year? What are your new year’s resolutions? Share your thoughts with me in the comments. Happy holidays and new year!
